STCW 95 Basic Safety Training - £750

Compass Sea School Ltd is an approved Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) training centre for the delivery of STCW 95 Basic Safety Training. The Standard of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) code requires all seafarers to receive familiarisation and basic safety training or instruction in accordance with section A-VI/1. Awareness of safety procedures, the safety equipment available, employment conditions and the working environment on board a merchant vessel are all covered in this training. Our centre provides all of the 4 modules for the STCW 95 scheme: Personal Survival Techniques (PST), Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR) Elementary First Aid (EFA) and Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF) training.

Entry Requirements

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age.

You will need to provide photographic evidence on arrival at the course. The photographic identification must be a valid Passport. All Merchant Navy personnel (which includes pre-Merchant Navy Students) must hold a valid ENG1 Medical Certificate.

Please note that there are practical elements on certain training modules that contain some physically demanding exercises. Any candidate unsure of their health and fitness as to their ability to participate in such activities should consult their doctor.

STCW 95 Personal Survival Techniques

Individual Module Cost: £125

This 1 day course covers both theoretical and practical elements and teaches the actions to be taken by individuals to protect themselves in the event of ship abandonment and emergency situations. It includes a practical swimming pool session using lifejackets, liferaft drills and jumping from a height into water.

STCW 95 Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting

Individual Module Cost: £500

This 2 day course covers both theoretical and practical elements and covers:

  • Appreciation of the hazards involved in fire at sea
  • Fire prevention precautions to be taken
  • Fire detection and means of raising the alarm
  • Initial 'First Aid' actions on discovery of a fire
  • The duties of members of a fire party and the equipment used
  • Practical fire fighting exercises in realistic scenarios

STCW 95 Elementary First Aid

Individual Module Cost £115

This 1 day course is a good mixture of theory and practical sessions covering basic first aid and Basic Life Support skills. You will develop knowledge, understanding and practical competence where appropriate in:

  • Assess the needs of the casualty and threats to own safety
  • Primary and Secondary Surveys
  • Adult basic life support and resuscitation techniques
  • Positioning of casualty
  • Major bleeding; control of bleeding; applying wound dressings; internal bleeding
  • Shock Management
  • Effects of Cold Shock and Hypothermia

STCW 95 Personal Safety and Social Responsibility

Individual Module Cost £95

This course covers training in safety procedures, accident prevention and familiarises new seafarers with employment and working conditions aboard a ship.

An interactive course delivered by our experienced commercial skippers lends itself to a thorough insight into living and working aboard.

Assessment There is continual assessment throughout the course with a series of practical exercises finishing with a short written assessment. Successful candidates will be awarded the STCW95 Basic Training Certificate on successful completion of the course.
